Replaying Baseball Two Steps from the Major Leagues in Post-War America!

The EL/SA was formed to create an interesting backdrop for an online OOTP simulated baseball league.  The teams of the Eastern League and Southern Association were chosen to create the two leagues as these were the premier Class A leagues of the 1940's (AA classification was not created until 1962).  In order to create some history and allow the salary structure to settle into vastly reduced revenues (see OOTP Reports),  the 1938-44 seasons were simulated with computer management.  Revenues and Salaries in this league were severely restricted compared to most contemporary leagues online today.  Scheduling took on a unique twist as most teams have multiple scheduled double-headers.  As was characteristic of the time, off days were a rarity.  Due to incomplete records, the players used were generated by the simulator.  The fifteenth and final human controlled season is complete effectively ending this simulation.  The league file has posted without online league mode enabled for anyone interested to play on in a solo manner.  I'd like thank everyone who participated over these three calendar years for making this a success by most measures.

1959 COMPLETE!!

PETERSON AND YEARWOOD NAMED CHET COVINGTON AWARD WINNERS!!

The 1959 Southern Association Chet Covington Award winner is from Birmingham this year. Bill Yearwood put together impressive numbers on the mound this season. This season Yearwood compiled an ERA of 3.10, going 22-7 in 35 starts. He fanned 194 while giving up 277 hits in 307.2 innings. He has 22 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 5th in the Southern Association in ERA and 1st in wins! Yearwood wins the award for the 2nd time in his 7-year career. Awards may not be the most important thing for Curtis Peterson, but Binghamton's right-hander smiled as he was named the Eastern League Chet Covington Award winner. Curtis has a record of 25-11 this season, with an ERA of 3.16. In 347.1 Innings he was able to strike out 157 batters. He has 17 complete games and 5 shutouts. He's 3rd in the Eastern League in ERA and 1st in wins! Peterson wins the award for the 2nd time in his 3-year career.

JOE MUNSON AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED!!

It was a day to remember for Birmingham's Vicente Plante, who won the Southern Association Joe Munson Award today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. He has hit 18 homeruns while batting .363 this season. His 187 hits and 62 walks add up to a .431 on-base percentage. He's 2nd in the Southern Association in batting and 4th in RBI! Plante wins the award for the 4th time in his 13-year career. The 1959 Eastern League Joe Munson Award winner has been announced as well. It's Reading's third baseman Christopher Sherrill who really had a great offensive year. His season features a batting average of .302 (141 hits in 467 AB), 23 doubles, 2 triples and 37 taters. Sherrill collected 120 RBI and 73 runs as well. He's 10th in the Eastern League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Sherrill wins the award for the 3rd time in his 11-year career.

BALDWIN AND ESKRIDGE WIN MEL PARNELL AWARD!!

The 1959 Southern Association Mel Parnell Award winner is from New Orleans this season. Bruce Baldwin put together impressive numbers for a rookie en route to win the first major award of his career. Let's hope more will follow for this 26 year old ballplayer. Baldwin has hit 22 bombs this year while batting .298. He adds 14 doubles, along with 93 runs scored. The Eastern League Mel Parnell Award winner was announced today as well, with Binghamton's pitcher Frank Eskridge earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. His ERA of 3.65 helped him to a 12-11 record this year. He struck out 72 and walked 49 in 229.1 innings. Frank has pitched one shutout and 7 complete games.
